hFinancial Help

We are very lucky to live in Canada. There are so many foundations and associations out there with resources to help us. The only problem is finding them!

Here on this webpage are some of them!

So not only are you now fighting cancer but now comes the struggle of fighting cancer and paying the bills. The last thing you need when you are sick is to worry about money. Unfortunately it is very much a reality and one of the most stressful worries that you and your family will be going through. I understand all too well. Being sick put me in debt. I was on a 72 month sick leave with only 45 weeks of work insurance and 15 weeks of unemployment insurance and 27 weeks with nothing. I am incredibly lucky that I have such amazing family and friends who put together fundraisers for me, which helped pay for the part of the surgery healthcare didn’t cover.

Most employers have health insurance for their employees. Read the insurance booklet carefully or ask your human resources for more information about how much you are allowed and for how many weeks.

If you don’t have health insurance at work or when you have used up all your insurance at work you can ask for unemployment insurance. Unfortunately they give you only 15 weeks. When you have a small injury it’s fine but for people who go through bigger diseases, 15 weeks is not enough. Especially when you have  one to two years of treatment ahead of you (chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, few surgery). A lot of people come back to work too early because they cannot afford to be in debt. And most of them become sick again because they didn’t have time to recuperate. I know that I was fortunate to have the support to be able to recuperate fully but I’m back at work now and still paying the debt that built up while I was sick. Below are tons of different links that can show you what is available to you when ill, what is free and where you can save money. Take advantage of whatever financial aid is out there. You need to take as much time as possible to recuperate without worrying about money.

Marie-Hélène Dube had to go through Thyroid cancer and she struggled financially so she decided to start a petition across Canada.

“A national petition to have modify the provisions of article 12 (3c) of the Act Employment Insurance, unchanged since 1971, which provides a maximum of fifteen [15] weeks of benefits payable in case of illness, in order to be adapted to today’s realit In Canada, it does touch all of us, directly or a close one, not matter province, religion, color and politic allegiances. Contribute to a better future, our future…”

Help making a change!

“The Honorable Denis Coderre, MP for Bourassa, today introduced in the House of Commons a Private Members’ Bill to extend from 15 weeks to 50 weeks the maximum period for which special benefits for illness, injury or quarantine may be paid. It also eliminates the two-week waiting period when special benefits for illness, injury or quarantine are paid.”  From 2011-11-08 13:56:45, Marie-Hélène Dubé Go and Sign! http://petitionassuranceemploi.com/en/

Some Doctors underestimate the type of work people are doing and send their patients back to work too fast especially after a surgery.  If your work is demanding physically don’t be scared to ask your doctor for more days.  Trust your body  your instinct and your limit.

Disabled & Caregivers: For disabled or caring for someone with a disability, Here are three large Government of Canada sites and one non-government resource that will describe the financial supports that are available to you, including benefit information, tax guidance and other funding.

Persons with Disabilities Online.  The Government of Canada’s Office for Disability Issues (ODI) pulls together a vast amount of information on disability-related financial topics with a mandate to promote the full inclusion and participation of Canadians with disabilities in all aspects of society and community life. Many important topics are addressed here, including the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), the Canada Disability Savings Grant and Savings Bond, the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities and the Disability component of the Social Development Partnership Program (SDPP-D). The Resource list on this site is worthwhile browsing as well.

Office for Disability Issues Service Canada has compiled a different Government of Canada list with numerous suggestions for services and benefits for Canadians Living with a Disability, such as applying for Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits or Disability Benefits for Veterans and seeking eligible tax credits for persons with disabilities. An excellent resource is the Guide to Government of Canada Services for People with Disabilities and their Families which is included in this site. The section entitled Income Benefits and Tax provides details for applying for a Disability Tax Credit or a Child Disability Benefit (CDB). Non-Governmental Organizations – Disability The National Benefit Authority

http://www.thenba.ca

“Many Canadians with disabilities qualify for substantial sums of money from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) of which they are unaware. At the National Benefit Authority, we specialize in a CRA program called the Disability Tax Credit that allows us to recover up to $35,000 on your behalf. We do all the hard work to make sure you receive every dollar the CRA owes you.” From the National Benefit Authority

The Canada Revenue Agency Form can be hard to understand. I contacted the National Benefit Authority. They are a group of lawyers who work for you to make sure you get money back. You have to pay them back a %, but it’s worth it.
